RJ04 - Reflective Journal Entry 4 - Due Saturday, Feb 14, 2009

  • Describe the inquiry activity you will use for your informal assessment review. Explain what science practice(s) it will teach and how you plan to assess them. Use the template "EDC 484 S09 RJ04 - Assessing Inquiry".

For my inquiry activity I am having student sbuild a model for cell division. They will be given a large piece of poaster board, which they will divide into 6 sections, one for each part of cell division. They will be given a number fo crat supplies including pipe cleaners, yarn, glue, etc. Students will be instructed to include all parts of cell division as well as to represent, the DNA, nuclear envelope, cell membrane, and spindle fibers as appropriate. Students can make the model in anyway they see fit, as long as they meet minimum requrments.

This will give students an opportunity to be creative and for them to get some practice making a hands on model of an abstract concept. Students will be assessed as I circulate the class and determine how well they can apply the concepts from class to making a model. Students will also be assessed based on thier final product: Is it presented in a logical order, is it clear to see what each material represents on the model, is it easy to read, are the sections labeled, etc. Also students will be given several conclusion questions to answer. They will be allowed only to use thier own diagram, so thier ability to make use of a model they created will come into play.
